Scotland’s ACEs (Adverse Childhood Experiences)
Action Community

We are a Scotland-wide community bringing people together to share stories, learn about adversity and trauma,
connect with others doing the work, and turn connection into action.

Learn

This section is designed to make information about adversity, trauma and relationships easier to understand and use in everyday life and community work.

What are ACEs?

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are stressful or difficult experiences that can happen during childhood. These might include things like abuse, neglect, loss, family separation, domestic violence, having a parent with mental health difficulties or living with addiction.

ACEs can affect how we feel, behave, learn and relate to others. But ACEs do not determine someone’s future. Supportive relationships, safe communities and opportunities to heal and connect can make a difference.

What do we mean by Trauma

Trauma isn’t only about what happened – it can also be about how an experience affects us.

People respond to difficult and stressful experiences in different ways. Understanding trauma can help us think differently about behaviour, relationships and what people might need to feel safe and supported.

Scotlands ACEs Action Ccommunity shares information and stories to help build understanding, compassion and connection.

Relationships matter

Safe, consistent and attuned relationships can support connection, regulation and recovery. This is relevant across families, education, workplaces and communities.

Looking for support

Scotlands ACEs Action is a community for sharing stories, learning, connecting and taking action. We don’t provide crisis or clinical support.

If something you’ve read or heard has brought something up for you, or you’re looking for support, there are organisations that can help.

A gentle reminder: SAAC is a community space for connection, learning and action. It is not a crisis or emergency service.
